How to set goals and stick to them: 5 tips and tricks

For many, the start of the New Year is a great time to set goals. The goal can be to eat healthier, be more active, broaden your horizons through a study, or any other ambition. This is a good start, but research shows that only 8% of people successfully achieve the goals set at the beginning of the year. Whether you make New Year’s resolutions or not, you can strive for personal growth at any time of the year. Here are 5 tips and tricks that will help you set and achieve goals to get better at yourself.

  1. Start small, start concrete

The first key to set goals is making sure they are realistic. If you set yourself unrealistic goals, you’re likely to miss them and end up frustrated. Start where you know you can do it, and slowly increase the pace. Also, make sure the goals you set are specific and trackable. For example, instead of aiming to “read often,” set a goal of reading one chapter of a book every day for a week.

  1. Find friends who supervise each other

It is important to have unwavering support from friends and family. See if you can convince family or friends to join in, and work toward your goals together. If you can’t convince them to help, the various societies at the university are a good option. Join a fitness club, reading club, or whatever you think will help you to set goals.
